Some Things to think about for the New Year

I know that we are ten days into the New Year and many of you already have New Year's resolutions, but we were given this prayer this morning that I really like and thought that it was a good thing to share with all of you as we head into this new year.

Prayer Of Detachment

Deliver me, O Jesus
from the desire of being loved,
from the desire of being extolled,
(Web Dic, Enthusiastically or Magnifiable)
from the desire of being praised,
from the desire of being preferred,
from the desire of being consulted,
from the desire of being approved,
from the desire of being popular.

Deliver me, O Jesus
from the fear of being humiliated,
from the fear of despised,
from the fear of suffering rebukes,
from the fear of being forgotten,
from the fear of being wronged,
from the fear of being ridiculed,
from the fear that others may be loved more than I.

Jesus, grant me the grace to desire
that others may be esteemed more than I,
that in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease,
that others may be chosen and I set aside,
that others may be praised and I unnoticed,
that others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become as holy as I should.

- John of the Cross (1542-1591)

Thanks for that reminder, brother. We just had few dozen 18-20 year old kids move into the Hope Center for the vocational school and they are always worried about what other think of them. I pray that I will be embarrassingly open and available to them and that their self-consciousness won't wear off on me.

Preach it brother! We all still care about what others think of us til the day we die, but I think this would be a great prayer to give to kids during those middle and high school years (it would have a lot of impact). Just a thought for anyone who is a youth group leader, involved with kids, etc.
